What are NTC2018 used for?
NTC 2018 (Technical Standard for Construction) is a set of technical regulations in Italy governing the design, construction and renovation of buildings. It was introduced in 2018 to replace the previous 2008 version.
These technical construction standards define the principles for the design, execution and testing of constructions, with regard to the performance required for the essential requirements of mechanical resistance and stability, including in the event of fire, and durability.
They therefore provide general safety criteria, specify the actions to be used in design, define the characteristics of materials and products and, more generally, deal with aspects relating to the structural safety of structures.
As far as application guidelines for achieving the prescribed performance are concerned, for what is not expressly specified in the present document, reference can be made to the proven standards and other technical documents listed in chapter 12.
In particular, those provided by the Eurocodes with the corresponding National Annexes constitute indications of proven validity and provide systematic support for the application of these standards.
Here are some of the key aspects of NTC 2018:
1. Seismic safety :
As Italy is a seismic-risk country, much of the NTC 2018 is devoted to the design of earthquake-resistant buildings.
The standards define requirements for reinforced concrete, steel and masonry structures, as well as criteria for the seismic assessment and adaptation of existing buildings.
2. Energy efficiency :
NTC 2018 focuses on improving the energy efficiency of buildings.
It sets requirements for thermal insulation, heating and cooling systems, lighting and other aspects that help reduce energy consumption.
3. Durability :
NTC 2018 also encourages the use of sustainable building materials and the implementation of environmentally-friendly construction practices.
4. Accessibility :
NTC 2018 takes into account the accessibility needs of people with disabilities.
It sets out requirements for ramps, elevators, toilets and other facilities to make buildings accessible to all.
It is important to note that the NTC 2018 is a complex and detailed technical document. Its implementation requires in-depth knowledge of current standards and regulations.
