The designer chooses between a dissipative behavior (which makes it possible to dissipate the energy introduced in the form of plastic deformations) and a non-dissipative behavior of the structure using a behavior coefficient q. The greater the behavior coefficient q, the more the seismic action decreases, but in return the more it is necessary to put in place particular constructive arrangements to dissipate the energy (controlled weakening of certain sections, geometric limitations, geometric relationship between the elements , bolted joint design requirements, fabrication requirements, ...).
